The prevention of falls and mobility related disability among older people is an urgent public health challenge around the world. Falls increase with age and can result in injury, loss of confidence, reduction of activity levels, loss of independence and increased risk of admission to a residential aged care facility. Physical activity programs are an effective single falls prevention strategy in the older population. This can improve strength, balance and endurance – all known risk factors for falls. Resistance training is also known to improve osteoporosis. PhysioHealth has developed a falls prevention program – “Staying on your Feet” – running for six weeks and fully supervised by a physiotherapist. This incorporates physical exercise guided toward a home program and education and advice on other known risk factors for falls prevention.
Our staff have had extensive training in this area and have achieved great results in guiding our clients to more independence.
